Wisconsin residents have great pride in our state. We love the Packers, the Brewers and our weather (most of the time). But most importantly, we love the fact that Wisconsin has its’ own identity that no one else can match.

That’s why we were a bit surprised when the proponents of the Kenosha casino project suggested that Wisconsin should be more like Las Vegas. Proponents of the Kenosha casino project actually compared Wisconsin to Las Vegas and suggested that we should build more casinos.

That’s right, they suggested that Wisconsin should build MORE casinos (read their statements here http://casinocompetitionforwisconsin.blogspot.com/2007/11/vegas-casino-expansions-prove.html ).

According to them, Wisconsin should build several massive multi-billion dollar casino complexes right next to each other because….well…it works in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, that is not what Wisconsin residents really want.

A statewide poll done by the Mellman Group, Inc. found that Wisconsin residents overwhelmingly oppose allowing more casinos in the state. The poll was done July 26-29, 2007 and surveyed 600 likely voters across Wisconsin.

According to the poll:

• Nearly three-quarters (72%) believe that Wisconsin has the right amount of casinos or too many already.

• Only 22% believe that the state should allow more casinos to open in Wisconsin.

• 58% are opposed to allowing new off-reservation casinos to open in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin does not need Las Vegas style casinos in our state. We need to continue to invest in our local employers who will invest back into Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, if the Mohegan Gaming Company builds their casino in Kenosha they will be able to take at least a quarter of a billion dollars out of Wisconsin and back to Connecticut.

Is that what Wisconsin really wants? Wisconsin gaming laws were intended to benefit Wisconsin Indian tribes, not Las Vegas style gaming companies from the East Coast.
